Lesson Highlights

  • True wisdom means seeing the deeper story, not just predicting outcomes
  • Real humility means never fully believing your own greatness, even in the face of others' praise
  • Kindness and generosity should be lived through action, not just speech
  • Doing the humble work without expectations
  • It is our job to see only Light within hardship and challenges
  • Ttraining our eyes to recognize the Creator in everything
  • Sometimes we need others to help remove what's holding us back
  • Even the darkest, most mournful moments can conceal greatest Light and cause for celebration

Lesson Description

This week's highlight is the Chozeh or Seer of Lublin, a blind kabbalist gifted with the ability to see beyond the five senses. Our teacher Karen Berg had a profound connection to this powerful kabbalist, and both left this world on the 9th of Av. Yehuda explains that through the stories and teachings from the Seer of Lublin we learn that true wisdom is not about predicting outcomes, but seeing the deeper story unfolding, as when he warned a man to hide from danger, yet that same man, by trusting his teacher instead and enduring hardship, walked away with far greater blessing than before. The Seer of Lublin's humility teaches us to never fully believe our own greatness. The Seer of Lublin's practice of washing dishes for the poor himself, just like when the high priest was cleaning the Holy of Holies with his own hands reminds us that true kindness is lived, not spoken. Perhaps his greatest gift is the ability to see only Light, even in hardship, understanding that nothing negative can truly come from the Creator; and in choosing to leave this world on Tisha B'Av, the day of deepest mourning turned into the day of greatest celebration. Through the legacy of the Chozeh of Lublin we learn how to find the Light hiding within the darkness, wherever we may currently stand.

About This Course

The kabbalists say that storytelling, beyond being a powerful way to convey messages and inspire, speaks directly to the soul. The teachings of Kabbalah are filled with allegories, as much of the wisdom that was passed on in story from ancient times. The spiritual meaning in stories of righteous souls assist us in getting the insight and the awakening to expand our consciousness and to integrate within ourselves elevated qualities and behavior.
