In his book, The Light of Wisdom, Rav Ashlag explains that the spiritual connection happens through knowledge, and that our consciousness should be involved in everything we do.  Meir Yeshurun quotes the Zohar, verses 387-388 of the portion Vayikra, which emphasizes the importance of the wisdom of Kabbalah brought by Rav Shimon Bar Yochai to the entire world.
